I wish I could take good pictures at night.

If I could, I would post one of my perfect neighborhood tonight, moon shining, everybody in their apartments with the lights glowing out the windows.

I just took down the recycling. A dog was barking. The trees were blowing around a little bit. The occasional car passed on the quiet street that’s about half a block away. Somebody was playing the guitar…I think it was in our next door neighbor’s condo - the people who have the giant Buddha and tropical plants on their deck and leave the doors to their kitchen wide open all summer long.

I think I’m built to live in a city. I feel very safe surrounded by all of these people, especially at night. Much safer than I felt living out in the country, although I do understand why that’s appealing. I remember even as a kid living in town, a much smaller town, I would love it when I was lying in bed and could hear a car pass by with the radio on. I think it made me feel less alone or something. Still, sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I name everybody I know who cares about me in geographical order, closest to farthest away, and the more neighbors I can put on that list, the better I feel.
