I recently signed up for a “work group” with three other grad students. Every week we get together for two hours. Some weeks we just sit, drink some coffee, eat some snacks, and get stuff done. Other weeks we give each other feedback on a piece of writing.
I signed up to present some of my work on Tuesday. Which means I need to send the group at least five pages by tomorrow so they have two days to read them. Which means I’m spending my Saturday night drinking red wine, half watching The Bodyguard, and writing a paper. I love this a little bit. I’m just chilling at my parents’ house this weekend anyway, and I’m a super geek about the teacher labor market.
I suspect this group is going to mean big things for my productivity. There’s no way I’d have anything written for this project if I hadn’t committed to sharing next week.

This is awesome! How did you sign up for the work group? Or, who organized this sort of thing? I’d love to find one at my school too.
