After this post I started thinking about how I used to and still do love anything having to do with the ocean. And I remembered this project, which I’d read about on Tumblr a couple of months ago. It’s the coolest example of crowd-sourcing I’ve heard of - scientists are asking for the public’s help in categorizing about 15,000 whale songs.
So I did it last night! It’s easy, and it’s fascinating. You study a whale song and match it up with others. Humans do this much better than computers, apparently, and the scientists hope that it will result in a greater understanding of whale “language.”
I’m posting this in case there are any other former future marine biologists out there who want to do some real work with whales for some real scientists.
